Terramation, or pet composting, is an alternative to animal cremation, a method of returning animals to the earth practiced by farmers for generations. The animal’s body is surrounded by wood shavings and other organic materials to create optimal conditions to boost naturally occurring microbes and beneficial bacteria. By mimicking nature and giving the process time, the body is transformed into healthy, fertile soil.
Terramation takes around 3 months. The resulting soil is similar to the nutrient rich compost you buy at a nursery or make in your back yard. Spread the compost in your garden or any green space, or use it to enrich the soil of a newly planted tree or shrub in your pet’s memory. Compost restores forests, sequesters carbon, and revitalizes distressed ecosystems.

Pet Composting vs Cremation or Aquamation
- Cremation: uses fossil gas to create heat over 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit, requiring 90% more energy than terramation. Through cremation, the body’s carbon matter is released as carbon dioxide gas through exhaust fumes.
- Aquamation: or alkaloid hydration, uses up to 92 gallons of water to transform pets’ bodies into ashes. Aquamation doesn't emit toxins like cremation, but it still uses only 10% less energy than flame cremation. The resultant ashes offer no environmental benefit and most of your pet's body is flushed down a drain.
- Terramation: transforms the body’s organic material, capturing carbon in the created soil, so carbon matter is returned directly into the earth. Composting a pet is a radical way to lighten your carbon footprint.
